We often find that a parent, teacher or another professional already involved with a family (such as a social worker or GP) will contact us on your behalf of a young carer. Our young carers team will then contact the young carers (or your a parent/guardian if aged under 16) to register details. If you are a young carer you are welcome to contact us yourself to find out what support we offer.
After referral to our service we send out a welcome pack. This contains information about Trafford Carers Centre and a consent form for the parent/guardian to fill in for the young carer to attend the evening groups. It also contains a questionnaire for the young carer to complete so our team can have a better idea of the caring responsibilities involved and how we can best support the young carer.
Depending on the details submitted in the questionnaire as well as with the young carers and their parent/guardians’ wishes, we may offer you a young carer’s assessment. This is where we find out about the caring role in more detail and together agree ways that we can support and make life easier. We can arrange visits in the home or visit a school or another place where the young carer feels comfortable to talk.
As part of our support we can:
* Offer information and advice
* Help to apply for funding to help a young carer excel with education or pursue hobbies.
* Accompany young carers to any meetings to do with their caring role.
* Refer to other services that can offer additional tailored support to any issues faced as a young carer.
